So, uh..... I really am having a hard time with this book I'm supposed to be reading for english. I don't understand it at all. And Nothing makes since. The only thing I can really say that I agree with is that Big Brother is a terrible leader and that the government lies all of the time just so Big Brother is right. I think that's stupid by the way... But could someone please explain it to me?

1984 is a dystopian brother representing the problems of a totalitarian (some would say communist or socialist) givernment ruling over every facet of the citizens' lives. George Orwell was warning against allowing the rulers of your nation stripping you of your privacy, your freedoms, and your basic civil dignity--whereas books like William Golding's LORD OF THE FLIES says that given an anarchy-like, free reign, humanity will fall into its most animal, primal state, 1984 says that given the chance to be free humanity will flourish.

ANIMAL FARM was another book Orwell wrote which deals with a similar plotline, though it deals more with the class struggle issues than 1984 does. I find both books quite refreshing, each unique enough to stand on its own.

I hope this helps you a little, and I would highly recommend reading the Wikipedia article on the book to help you keep the basic plot in your head as you read. Doing that has heped me read through several books in school that I struggled with.
