Karinya by Paul Drewitt

Is it a heart-touching tale of tragedy? Or should we call it a highly sorrowful fiction? The book Karinya is, in my opinion, a unique and interesting blend of these genres of literature. Published in 2020 by Adelaide Books, it is a sad story of poverty, abuse and strong self determination, focusing on the main characters of Kirra and Banjo.

Kirra is a 17-year old girl born into poverty. She lives with her sick aunt, Diane. Although she is constantly subjected to a high level of poverty, sexual harassment and abuse, she is determined to stop the injustices suffered by her people. Having been inspired by great achievers like Luke Skywalker and Eddie Mabo who were activists during their times, her aim of being an activist is very strong. Her boyfriend, Banjo wins an all-expense paid stay at the Mirambeena Resort, Darwin. Instead of this being an exciting moment, reverse is the case as the police begins to chase them. Did Kirra and Banjo commit any crime? Will she continue to strive towards her dream of being an activist? Read this interesting story to find out.

The author's use of words and literal styles makes this story an "easy to read". What I liked the most about Karinya is the strong and inseparable bond that exists between the duo- Kirra and Banjo. It really made me to understand that the friend who always stands by you through the thick and thin is worth being called a friend. Karinya is so interesting, educative and highly motivational. Change doesn't come so easily. It takes determination and consistency for one to cause a change. Kirra was bold enough to pass through the hard times and she arose victorious at the end.

Mr. Drewitt deserves some accolades for this awesome work. He made me feel like I was there witnessing the whole events. The imagery was something else. This story is filled with moments that'll make you want to cry. It's filled with suspense. I'll be waiting to hear your testimonies.

In rating this work, I give it 4 out of 4 stars. The reason is because the book is highly inspiring, full of lessons. In fact, the lessons I learnt from reading this book cannot be written down. They're numerous.

I highly recommend this book to lovers of literature who also aspire to cause a change and put a permanent end to the injustices faced by a lot of people. The story will also teach them to be strong and determined even in the midst of the storms.
