Manelick de la Parra is a Mexican writer who went to Paris at a young age to study literature. In his book Adorno y sus dos Fantasmas, he states the adventures he had when his friend Maribel asks him to look after her house and her cat named Adorno so that she can go meet her father lying in his sickbed.
With much persuasion, the author agrees to cover for his friend as the house houses a priceless collection of books which sounded like treasure to Manelick as he was a student of literature at the time. Adorno is enjoying his time by catching all the rodents in the house. Since all this happened in a quick phase, Maribel was unable to inform the owners of the house, who happens to be a couple, about the authors' stay there. Because of this Manelick is in constant fear of getting caught as a thief when the owners of the house return back. He is afraid of getting deported to native Mexico if the couple happens to file a complaint of him staying in their house allegedly.
The author manages to find the couple is in conflict and identifies the man as 'J' and the woman as 'A'. During the course of the story, mysteries are unleashed. Who are the strange couples 'J' and 'A'? Can the author manage to look after Adorno till Maribel returns? Will the author be mistaken for a thief and get deported?
The author has a way with words to keep the reader enchanted in the story till the end. As the story is a part of the authors' life, it keeps getting fascinating. All the twists and turns in the story are keeping the reader on the edge of suspense. The characters in the story are Manelick, his friends Maribel and Claudette, the cat Adorno and the couples, J and A.
Apart from some typo mistakes, the reading was smooth. Use of colloquial Spanish might be difficult to follow for international readers. I personally think that this story deserves 4 stars out of 4 for its overalls.
