H.C. Heartland’s Short Stories From the Heart is a collection of eight short stories from various genres including science fiction, historical fiction, southern, drama, and suspense all while integrating romance, friendship, living life to the fullest, and self-discovery.
In Courage in a Coffee Cup and Falling Asleep at Midnight, readers discover that love can happen anywhere, including a coffee shop. To keep a relationship strong, however, both have to nurture it, learn to talk to each other, and learn to express how much they mean to each other.

In a Morning to meander, a man named Fred’s doctor tells him he needs to learn to relax and eat healthier if he wants to live to be old. In an attempt to find relaxation, he meets a boy who teaches him that life is not always about work, but also about the simple joys in life, like catching butterflies or skipping rocks.

In Harold’s Helmet, a wife discovers that romance can take on many forms and that things aren’t always what they seem. That doesn’t, however, mean that true love can’t exist, even when your husband is an alien.

In Lanto, readers encounter a young woman who is a house servant for an old man she considers family. As the man’s time grows to a close, Lanto learns that it’s the people who stick by you and care about you that are important and matter in your life.

In Ferdinand’s Missing Red Hat, a boy loses his hat. When he discovers a bully has taken it, he worries he will not be able to get it back. Being poor, he knows he won’t be able to ever buy another one as good as his red one. When some miraculous events occur, however, he realizes, with patience, the brighter side of things will always shine through.

In Light of Day, a man’s wife is in a coma after the two of them get into a car accident. When strange things start happening around the library, he wonders if the merger his company has him working on has a group of people trying to stop it from happening. Is he dreaming? Did he really ever wake up from the car accident? Will his wife be okay?

A touching, entertaining set of short stories. The stories are well-developed and engaging. The characters are fairly well-developed for being such short stories. Although some of the stories had predictable endings, they were cute, cheesy, and ideal for these stories. I especially loved the last story and its ending. Although I kind of predicted the truth, some of the twists and turns still surprised me.

My biggest complaint however would be the grammar and the typos. The book could use a little grammar and spell check editing. A couple of the stories at the beginning were also a little confusing to follow, but enjoyable nonetheless. Otherwise, the stories had the effect the title, Short Stories From the Heart suggests. The reader will easily fall in love with the characters, be rooting for their happy ending, and be eager to keep reading.

I would rate this 3 out of 4 stars, because, although it needs a little editing, I wouldn’t have passed up reading this book for the world and readers who enjoy warm fuzzy stories will feel the same way after reading this book.
