Review of The Legacy of Winter Moon

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Legacy of Winter Moon" by Howard L. Clawson.]
Howard L. Clawson’s novel, The Legacy of Winter Moon, tells an interesting story but falls flat when it comes to the characters involved. Due to these reasons, I rate this book two out of four stars. The plot has enough interesting ideas to bring it above 1 star, but the characters lack enough depth to make it worth three or four stars.
Telling a young man’s story of returning to his hometown after spending years serving in the military, Clawson’s protagonist, Alex Pettigrew, returns to discover that his grandfather is missing, presumed dead, and has left an incredibly large sum of money to Alex. As Alex works to uncover what happened to his grandfather, he discovers that his grandfather left behind both allies and enemies that Alex encounters. He soon finds that his grandfather also has placed him in a high status within his company, allowing Alex to take over the business. He quickly adapts to his new environment and sets out to redefine the company and make it as successful as possible. Unfortunately, Alex faces complications towards his goal as he uncovers the many unloyal and unethical employees that must be removed from their positions before the company can reach its full potential.
The most enjoyable aspect of this novel was, by far, the fast-paced storyline chock full of twists and turns that uncover new details about the protagonist’s past. I also enjoyed the author’s clear intent to create a modern main character that makes an effort to ensure that the women in his company are treated with respect and hold positions of power, though, in a few instances, this came across as having a bit of a savior-complex.
Unfortunately, Alex makes for a somewhat bland main character which reduces the overall quality of the book. Alex also seems to lack a bit of depth and maintains the same emotional state for nearly the entirety of the story. Additionally, almost all supporting characters seem to solely exist to interact with Alex and do not have particularly complex personalities and stories. If not for this lack of depth, the story could have potentially been much more engaging.
Because of both the fast-paced storyline and the lack of depth, I would recommend this book to younger adults and teenagers that will enjoy the action and not mind the flatness of the characters. Due to the occasional profanity used, this book is not suitable for young children.
Overall this book is worth reading for those that read for plot rather than characters, and it makes for a fun and quick read.
