A riveting book by William H. Cole, McDowell is a gritty fictional story about one man's fraudulent and devious schemes named Dr. Haim McDowell. McDowell begins as the notorious and charming main character seated in the prestigious Presidency of the Board of Regents for the International College of Surgeons. And the President's nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services. McDowell is also a widower, a divorced husband with his longtime mistress Rima from Kathmandu, Nepal. The father of three biological children. Ann, from his first marriage. Billy and Sophie, from his second late wife. And two stepdaughters, Tasha and Candice, from his third widowed and divorced wife, Carole Mastriano. Along the journey comes Hulga, but how long will that love affair last? Let's not forget hatred, Maria Petulant! Then there is a much tamer and artistry, Winona Payman! Sheesh, McDowell and his lovers!

Sophie, McDowell's favorite, is a somewhat ambitious and semi-famous photographer with love for girls, or can Charles Gibson alter her outlook? Outside of that, she does not seem friendly to most and has a complicated relationship with June. Billy is a young father with a not-so-aspiring future and soon lusts for whom he cannot have until circumstances change. Tasha is desperate to be loved and is left alone with Billy's child for now. Ann is a mother of twins and entangled in a troubled marriage. Her husband, Robert, is arrested and convicted for a heinous crime. But her mischievous son, Jeremy, is more disturbed than one could imagine. Candice is not mentioned throughout the story.

Meanwhile, TV Journalist Paige Sterling reluctantly chooses to produce a documentary special about McDowell's presidential achievements on healthcare. As a result, Perry Rosenthal, her boss, pushes Paige off the project. Alternatively, what happens next and discovered will stun you! Reader beware, Dr. Hiram McDowell is a man with a few hidden identities and talents. His need for power and control. Manipulation, survival, and unaccountability are uncanny—especially the need to belong while stuck on a victim mentality. And Paige Sterling and Max Rojas are still hot on his trail!

I love this book because it grabs my attention from beginning to end. A variety of emotions arose while reading it. I found myself on the fence with McDowell and his shenanigans. I wanted to toss the book aside. There were other instances I could not stop reading and put it down. I just wanted to relish it. I, too, appreciate the flashes in the story where McDowell appears caring and selfless. Such as when he showed concern for Billie and Sophie. Be that as it may, the desire to uncover the truth is the joy behind reading this entire book, as well as the nod to New Jersey, my home state.

I wouldn't say I like McDowell's sneaky methods, though. His self-indulgence for financial gain leads to some questionable choices. And I do not like the attributes of revenge and greed! Michael O'Leary is so hell-bent on retaliation it backfires for a time. Furthermore, I'm not too fond of a father who does not encourage his son to take responsibility for his actions. And although Tasha is no saint in becoming pregnant, Billie is as responsible. I am likewise not a fan of Carole's bullying of McDowell to do what she wants him to do when it comes to Billie and Tasha's muddle-up relationship.

Apart from this, McDowell has the makings of a great television series and Hollywood film. There are plenty of spectacular and surprising moments to keep the readers tuned in and screaming at the screen. The rise and after that of Dr. Hiam McDowell is enough to convince them. Therefore, I rate McDowell 4 out of 4 stars and recommend it to readers who revel in the elements of shock and awe—twist and turns—coming into one's self! Bravo! Applause to William H. Cole for publishing an incredible tale for all to take pleasure in reading.
