Review of We Drank Wine
We Drank Wine and Other Short Stories by Marion Reidel is a fascinating collection of twenty-three linked short stories. All the stories are bound together by common characters and common locations. They delve into the lives of four Canadian women; Janice, Sandra, Beth, and Celeste. The stories highlight their lives, from the days they were in college to their retirement days. Sandra, Beth, and Celeste met in college and formed a lifelong friendship. Janice is Celeste’s neighbor. These short stories talk about the bond these women had and the twists and turns they face in their lives.
I don’t enjoy reading short stories, but I must admit, this one kept me awake at night. There were a lot of things to love about these stories. They are stories that touch on things that happen in most people’s day-to-day life. They are told in ways that will provoke thoughts and draw laughter. These stories are fictional, but the characters feel real. The circumstances the characters are going through feel very familiar. Most readers will see a total reflection of these characters in the people around them. I know someone who craves attention, just like Janice. It is safe to say that the author did a phenomenal job with character development.
Most of the stories in this collection are told from the third-person perspective. This perspective allowed me, as a reader, to get full access to different characters as well as an outside perspective of their traits. The writer dipped in and out of the minds of different characters, creating a rich narrative and offering an expansive view of the plot. We get to know what motivates the characters as we follow through with their friendship. We get an inside scoop of their marriages, the support they give each other as friends and the societal pressure they face.
The author of this book has a natural knack for writing prose. The expositions in these stories seamlessly blend into the narratives, and they did not feel congested with overwhelming information. Marion deployed vivid writing and perfectly painted clear pictures using descriptive language. She painted memorable pictures with words that stuck in my mind. What can I say? I enjoyed reading this book.
There is nothing I disliked about this book. It was a gripping and satisfying read. The editing was exceptional; I did not encounter any grammatical errors while reading it. With all things considered, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to readers who love books that talk about lifelong friendships.
