Review of The Fugitive (The Border Series Book 5)
The Fugitive (The Border Series Book 5) written by David Griffith is a fast-paced, action-packed novel with a riveting plot which tells the story of Lonnie Bowers, a Christian man with strong beliefs. Lonnie once worked in counter-intelligence for longer than he wanted to, working within the law to take down Mexican drug cartels and all the illegal activities associated with them.
After settling into his long-awaited and well-earned life of a cattle rancher, Lonnie slowly moves away from his previous life and dedicates himself to his ranch, his wife and three children. Lonnie ignores a warning that while he may have put aside his law enforcement days, the drug cartel bosses have not forgotten him and send their highest paid assassin to deal with their unsolved problem for a substantial fee. Lonnie takes it upon himself to find the person who paid the assassin to kill him and, in the process, encounters the most evil trade in the world, orchestrated by an enemy from his past life. With the grace of God and his wits, Lonnie saves two victims from human trafficking and a life of torture.
Gus, Lonnie’s brother, is killed and Lonnie becomes the main suspect. He hides out in the forest and mountains to evade capture but Corporal McAlister is hot on his trail and is not the type of man to give up on solving a case. With help from his long-time friend and previous boss, he dips back into the life of law-enforcement and drug cartels, something which he has no option but to do in order to save himself and his family.
The story and characters are well thought out and the book is expertly written. While the story is filled with action, intrigue and anticipation – the author does a fantastic job of including just enough religion to fit the story without the book becoming a Christian story. One of my favourite lines from the book is: “The difference between dying and staying alive is determined by one’s ability to outwait your enemy.” There are many other books in this series and I look forward to reading each and every one of them.
The author, David Griffith, lives in British Columbia where he is a cattle rancher and award-winning author. He has a working knowledge of ranch life and is well acquainted with the Canadian and Mexican landscapes. Follow him through his blog about ranch and border life on his website at www.davidgriffith.ca.
I have no negative comments to make and rate this novel four out of four.
