Review of The Fugitive (The Border Series Book 5)
A normal life. An unaffordable luxury for someone who has both feet buried in the mire of dangerous undercover intelligence work deep in the heart of the criminal underworld. like drug cartels. After a considerable period spent in wading in perilous waters, of course, enemies eventually accumulate, the desire to get even paramount, waiting for the opportune time to pounce when it is least expected.
After years of doing counter intelligence work with a highly secretive private intelligence company, Lonnie Bowers decided to call it quits. He wanted a chance, a risk actually, at living a normal life in quite a normal setting but far from his possible enemies. He has three kids and his wife was a gem who supports him in everything he does. Their ranch located in one of the remotest regions of British Columbia was their safe haven. Lonnie thought he was safe, that his beloved family was safe, that the ranch's very remoteness would shield his family from the possible danger posed by his unknown and unseen enemy from a past he now tries so hard at consigning to a certain part of his memory. For a few years, there was normalcy. They were happy as a family, they were safe. Or so he thought.
In The Fugitive (The Border Series Book 5) by David Griffith, Lonnie's past caught up with him one unlucky day, while he was out in the meadows. A bullet grazing his chest caught him off-guard. In the blink of an eye, the safety of their home, their very location, was compromised. Despite a previous warning from Jesus, a Mexican who knew of his previous work, of a possibility of a Mexican drug cartel he may once have worked on, sending a hardened thug to take him out and blow him to kingdom come, Lonnie was complacent. True enough, the ranch became the hunting ground for a very dangerous, unmatched predator, an assassin named El Gato, hell bent on making the kill. Gus, Lonnie's brother who was at the wrong place at the right time, became a knight in shining armor. Complications however ensued when the local police got involved, and Lonnie eventually became a fugitive. His quest was to find his unnamed enemy before another assassin was sent, and beat him to it. The search for answers brought him to places, relentlessly pursuing leads to shed light to the truth.
Frankly, I loved reading novels with action-suspense plots, the kind that could keep me glued to the pages. I liked that in this particular story, the author developed every character with strength, specially nine-year old Conor and Clarissa, the wife. I like it when boys man up in the most dire circumstances. And of course a supportive missus added to the mix is perfect. From the very riveting opening salvo up to the equally satisfying conclusion, I was hooked. What's not to like in this book? Nothing, really. I am totally sold.
I'll rate this book a whooping 4 out of 4 stars. I'll recommend a great read like this to lovers of action-thriller genre. I am sure you will get the same adrenaline rush I had the entire reading session. So dig in!
