On a stormy night, Tom Olsen finds out that he has a granddaughter when his ex-wife dumps her at his door. The timing could not have been worse as he was about to go on a trip in the wilderness of the Olympic Peninsula. Even though he thinks about cancelling the trip, his good friend William convinces him to bring Sarah along.

Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon takes us on that trip with Sarah, Tom, William and his daughter Myra. From Tom’s perspective, his granddaughter brings only trouble, but before the book is over, they wander that maybe Sarah is the one leading them on this journey, where they begin to question everything they know about their history and their legends.

What I liked most is how the author combined science (how people came to different geographical areas thousands of years ago), legend (Native American legends of how the humans were created), politics (the problems the tribe was facing), and also archaeology, history, mystery, spirituality, visions and more. It is a book full of action, but does not feel clogged. Each situation is brought at the perfect time, described perfectly, and also leaving some mystery.

Another thing I liked about the book is how the author expresses himself to show the time difference between the past and the present. He used more suitable words and phrases in the dialogue and description happening in the past.

I really liked how Charlie Sheldon built his characters with flaws, imperfect, and how motivated they were to stop the big corporation that was about to destroy their peace. Another aspect that I liked is how Tom, William, Myra and Sergei had a lot to learn from Sarah, a thirteen year old girl, accentuating that we have something to learn from every human, either young, old, man or woman, and how day to day situations teach us about trust, grief, and not only.

In my opinion the book does not have any negative aspects, I enjoyed everything about it.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, as it is nicely written, I loved the action and characters and all that they went through. The idea is original and the book is professionally edited.

I believe this book is for those who enjoy a bit of mystery. If you are bothered by violence do not read the book, as it has description of hunting (killing animals), murder, fighting and kidnapping.
