Moonlight on the Natahala is about an old man named Edward, his ghostly wife, and a young woman named Lena who is going through a tough marriage. The old man is holding on with all his life to the memory of his deceased wife. Her ghost is often seen along the river where they lived. Their house has been kept like a shrine to her. Lena and Edward become close friends, each helping the other to face and deal with their pain.

Edward is dealing with his grief, old age and that ever looming death that comes to us all. Lena is dealing with parents who only see her as a means to help them climb the social ladder and has saddled her with a cheating husband who is also a cruel control freak.

This book is a peaceful ramble through this time in their lives. Edward is a gentleman in all ways, with the ease of old fashioned chivalry. His love for his wife still burns strong even after years of death. He shows Lena what real love can be like by his example. Lena gives Edward a new focus. His care for her helps him to let go and her interest in his life gives him an outlet for his memories.

I enjoyed the simple peaceful feel of the story. It was refreshing to read of real people living normal lives and coping in such creative ways. I enjoyed the ghost aspect, that his wife stayed with him after death. I liked the way things worked out in the end, (no spoilers). There is a comical twist that Edward causes to happen to the scumbag husband that I loved.

My only criticism is that it tends to ramble a bit too much in places and the writing isn’t as strong as it could have been. This story has potential to be much more emotionally touching than it came across in the writing. The characters are fun and real but I felt a little held apart from them.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I took off one star because I felt it could have been so much better. But it is still a soft little read with a warm feel to it so I’ll be kind. I recommend this book to someone who wants a bit of a lift concerning the possibilities of an everlasting love and the hope that it is never too late to start again.
