Have you ever thought about what the future would look like if we did not act on the climate crisis? We will see glaciers vanishing, rising waters wiping out islands, and acidic oceans. That is the reality for Laurel and her family in Earthships, Book 2 by Bonnie Jane Hall. Laurel grew up in a town called Rigby, Idaho, with a large family. But this is not your average suburban family. They live in an Earthship, a house built underground suitable for any challenge that stands in its way. Since the Earth is in a dire state and so is humanity. Thieves and gangs come for those who are abundant in survival necessities. They came for Laurel and her siblings. Despite their sneaky attacks, Laurel can see them coming, having visions of events that will happen in the future. Even though her premonitions are frightening, it protects her and her loved ones.

Living on the Earth is now very dangerous. One day tornadoes are ripping through towns taking almost every building and car in sight. And the next, wildfires ravishing through, leaving nothing but ash behind. That is why Laurel builds Earthships for families across the country. It is no longer safe to live above ground with the conditions that come about. Those who live underground have a better chance of surviving than those that live above. Medication, food, and water are scarce. Those who have access have to go through androids to get what they need. The planet we once knew has changed forever.

This book was written well by Bonnie Jane Hall. I admired how she humanized the experience these people are having. She wrote about their day-to-day lives as if it was a life you are living yourself. This book was very well edited and easily digestible.

The only negative there is to be said is that there is misinformation about Aspergers. If someone does not have current knowledge of the autism spectrum, this could create harmful stereotypes.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. Even though this book is fiction, you can find scientific facts throughout the book. For instance, the Arctic Flu is known in the scientific community and those outside as well. This book had the perfect balance of romance, tragedy, realism, and family.

I would recommend this book to a reader that holds an interest in science. And has questions about climate change and what the damaging effects could be.
