The Unexpected Vacation of George Thring by Alastair Puddick is a fictional novel about a man who unintentionally leaves the ordinary life he’s been sick of living, and gets caught up in an exciting and dangerous adventure. The story involves confusion, honesty, living life to the fullest, misunderstandings, and overcoming fears. It also involves a lot of Elvis impersonators.
George Thring is a man who has not been living the life he dreams of. Everything about his life bores him, but he just keeps on with the routine, too scared to try anything new. One night on his way home from work, he passes his house instead of stopping and drives for hours, not paying attention to what he’s doing or where he's going. He ends up in a strange little town during the town’s Elvis Presley festival. George meets and falls for a woman, experiences new people and things, and unfortunately, gets mixed up in a bank robbery. Though he had been previously living an extremely uneventful existence, through the quirky situations he lands in, George Thring quickly learns how courageous he truly is.
I found the book to be interesting and quirky. It involves many over-the-top situations and events that brought about a change in George. Even though the situations were extreme, they were believable because of George’s relatable character and the ways he reacted to the situations he found himself in. The book was surprising and had twists that I didn’t see coming. There were times when I thought I had it figured out and knew what was coming next, but Puddick kept the suspense and surprises coming. It also is inspirational and stresses the significance of life being happy.
There were quite a few typos in the book, which I didn’t appreciate. Besides the typos, which caused grammatical errors, I thought it was very well written and kept me engaged in the story. Even when things were going smoothly for George in the book, I remained interested to see where his vacation would lead. I think almost anyone in today’s world could relate to George even though they’ve probably never been in his outrageous circumstances.
I would rate The Unexpected Vacation of George Thring by Alastair Puddick as 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy fiction, vacations, and Elvis Presley. This book is unusual and exciting in a relatable way. It was enjoyable to read and very memorable.
