Review of Sting
Gabriella Ayala is an agent for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Her boyfriend, Danny Stockton, is a senior agent who dreams of being elected sheriff in a small rural town. Inmate and jailhouse lawyer, Karl Gebhardt, files a habeas corpus for inmate E. L. Revell. A decorated war hero is strangled to death. Sheriff Johnny Haskins is sure E. L. Revell had something to do with the murder, and he needs to solve a murder before the next election when Danny runs against him. Judge Farnsworth is killed, and a serial killer is moving closer to Abbeville. Will the small-town sheriff get the case he needs to win the election, or is he in over his head? Or will Danny's dream come true? Read the fictional book Sting: Mayhem and Murder Tempered by Love by Thomas B. Calhoun to find out.
Thomas Calhoun has done a fantastic job with character development. I could visualize the members of the small community of Abbeville. I felt the bigotry and discrimination from the white members of the community who were descendants of the White Citizens Council and the Ku Klux Klan. These white supremacists believed they had a right to carry guns, women had their place and did what they told them, school prayer needed no restrictions, and women consented to rape by the clothes they wore and not having men escort them to evening events. Within these scenarios, Thomas Calhoun developed Gabriella's character into a strong independent woman in Law Enforcement. The author has portrayed police corruption with illegal searches, biases, and profiling. The author fully developed the characters' personalities regardless of their race, background, and wealth. Although I disagreed with the political and cultural values portrayed in this novel, they fit the plot perfectly and made the story realistic. Regardless of race or gender, each character was given equal attention and respect by the author.
This book needs to be edited by a professional editor. It has more than ten errors, including missing and wrong punctuation, wrong character names used, missing, extra, and wrong words used throughout the narrative, and both a period and a comma at the end of sentences. The editing was the only negative in the book, but these errors were distracting and affected my reading pleasure.
I am giving this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the editing. Once the author has the book edited by a professional editor, it will deserve the maximum number of stars because the plot flows smoothly, making the book an enjoyable read if you can overlook the errors.
I recommend this exciting book to mature readers over the age of 15 who enjoy murder mysteries, romance, and politics. There is minimal religious content that consists of a Priest being called when one of the characters dies and a Catholic wedding. The sexual content is mild and non-descriptive. There is borderline profanity throughout the book. If oppression, bigotry, and discrimination trigger you, you may want to avoid this book.
