A lighthearted book revolving around female friendship, self-reflection, and guided self-improvement, Backcomb & Tattoo by Shea R Embry is perfect book to read when you want to feel happy entertained and relaxed. The novel shows friendship between Aunt Mary Opal and her friends Rachael, Jesi and Nicole who is very younger than her in age but they are all same in heart. Aunt Mary Opal is a person with many secrets-good and bad ones, which led her life to be filled with adventures with her young friends. Their friendship group started out with Rachael and Aunt Mary Opal and then Nicole and Jesi joined soon. They meet up once a week to drink and just spend time with each other which lead to head to head meditation due to a hilarious situation. This book talks about transformation and character development through female friendship. Aunt Mary Opal’s secrets, Jesi’s commitment issues, Nicole’s trauma due to an abusive relationship and Rachel’s issues of being too selfless and end up feeling exploited in her personal relationships is all discussed and dealt with in this novel.

The way these women deal with problems is admirable. This is a female dominated book with story line following the main characters life and adventures. Even though they talk about other people in their life the story mainly revolves around these four ladies and their love and friendship. These women are loud, emotional and quirky and they show this out to the world unapologetically which made this novel more realistic. The author has talked about many sensitive issues like domestic violence, assisted suicide, emotional manipulation and cheating in a very interesting way. They have also talked about same sex relationship and polyamory relationship.

I have not found any negative aspects in this book as they convey all disputable matter in a very beautiful way. I have only found one grammatical error and the story is well framed and is kept interesting throughout.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for great storytelling and dialogues. After reading this novel their small quirks carry on to us giving us fond memories of these four women and their love and friendship. With all the secrets and misadventures this book is for sure a page turner.

I recommend this book to an audience who love light hearted novels with humor and friendship. I would not recommend this novel to people who like male dominated books with heterosexual love story and also ones who expect philosophical and theoretical values. After reading this book lets incentive one of the favorite belief of these women “Have fun, it’s the best thing to have.”
