Backcomb & Tattoo by Shea R. Embry is a book about how four women found each other and developed friendship. Rachael's friendship started with an elderly woman called Aunt Mary Opal. Later on, they became three after Jesi joined them, and finally, Nicole joined later. Rachael was going through a stressful moment as she had just traveled back from Charlotte to Atalanta after being with her ailing mother for six months. After coming back, that is when she met the new friend, Aunt Mary Opal. Rachael’s husband, Jake LeBlanc, was a musician. He didn’t settle in the same place. Hence, mostly Rachael was lonely. Meeting Aunt Mary Opal was timely as she gave her the kind of comfort she needed, considering the state she was in.

Aunt Mary Opal was a remarkable character as she transformed Rachael’s life. She listened to her and comforted her whenever she was down. Later, Rachael’s mother succumbs to cancer. Rachael is forced to make the hurtful decision to let their mother go in front of her two sisters, Sharon and Kathleen. Rachael had to move on with her life after the death of her mother. She enjoyed the company of her new friends. Mary Opal played a key role in the friendship. She was a warm and interesting woman who made the lives of these three of her young friends better than they were. This is a book you should read to get the lovely moments these friends went through as they shared their stories. They met to drink together as they talked.

As I read the book, I was amazed by the love and friendship that existed between the four friends. The way their friendship blossomed was just amazing. It was true friendship, and they were like sisters. Rachael could wake up and surprise her new friend by planting flowers outside her door. Another aspect of love is evident between Rachael and her husband. She loves her husband so much, despite him not being available every time due to his frequent trips to perform on stages. In the end, we realize that Aunt Opal had kept some parts of her life secret. This tells us that not every aspect of our lives should be disclosed. Some should be kept secret.

I was so hurt by the abuse my aunt Mary Opal went through from her husband in their early marriage before he died. This could be the reason she decided to befriend this young lady in order to talk about life from time to time. Neglecting a child is an example of infidelity, as Opal decided to tolerate the abuse in order to save her marriage for the sake of her daughters. She went through a lot. She used to be hit, and he later changed to squeezing her until she blacked out.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was well written as I did not find any major errors and it was exceptionally edited. I liked the author’s style of writing. The book has an easy flow and the language used is not complicated. I would recommend this book to anyone who would love to know the importance of friendship and love and its importance.
