This book was an enjoyable story about how a teenage girl, Jules who tries to break a curse that not only is placed on her family, a curse that dooms all men in her family to die before their 35th birthday, but also on the local baseball team. Helping her is her friend, Matt, who she battling her feeling for and her adorable cousin. Who could also forget her eccentric grandmother? This great cast of characters along with a good sprinkle of humor, made this a really worthwhile book to read.
A definite 4 out of 4 as I felt that this book was a great find and I had lots of fun reading it. It was a really enjoyable read. I thought that it was well written, the characters had actual depth and the author manages to incorporate lots of humor which really made the book all the more readable. I thought that the book had a clever unique plot and even though I have no knowledge of baseball whatsoever, the author easily explained the baseball backstory and I easily picked up on the curse and what it was about without needing additional information. I think that the author has thought up a really unique book idea, I certainly haven't read anything like this book before! I also really enjoyed the love tangle that progressed along with the plot (I guess that I am a sucker for those) and throughout the book I was honestly worried if the curse would be broken in time.
My thoughts on the synthesis of the novel. I thought that it was definitely well put together. The characters were complex, the plot was creative, conclusive and gripping. I really enjoyed reading this as a holiday read. Even though the author managed to explain the curse backstory, it would have been nice to have a page or so explaining the history of the curse as additional information at the end of the book. The thing that I liked the most about this book was the unique and creative plot. I didn't find anything that I disliked about this book as I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
I liked that the author didn't drag the book on for too long, I was kept waiting in suspense for the right amount of time, any longer and I would have given up and skipped to the end of the book, any shorter and I would have felt cheated out of a novel. But thankfully think book was none of these and it was with regret that I didn't read slower when it came to the last page. I think that this author shows considerable talent for fiction writing and that if this book ever came to print, it would be a success. I would enjoy reading a sequel but I thought that the author rounded off the book plot nicely. I did not find many spelling or grammatical errors (which is a pet peeve of mine) and I was really impressed by this attention to detail and the effort that was put into the book.
I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and my family, especially those who have a taste for young adult romance/adventure because it was funny and a good holiday read as it was romantic without being mushy and I liked the characters, I thought that they were realistic and spiced up the plot. (Especially the eccentric grandmother) there were also enough plot twists to keep me interested but what I liked about this book was that it didn't pan out in the stereotypical manner that other young adult fiction books seem to do. This book is light, entertaining and will have you rooting for the heroine throughout the book. It's definitely a keeper and re-reader! I am looking forward to see what else Margo L Dill will come up with next.
