Backcomb & Tattoo by Shea R. Embry is a story of discovering oneself, and finding true friendship and happiness. It is about four women from different walks of life, drawn together by chance, who help each other with their journeys of self-discovery, overcoming fears, finding love, accepting loss, and learning how to be happy.

Embry narrates the daily activities of four women; Aunt Mary Jane Opal, Racheal, Jessi, and Nicole. She takes us through their individual lives where they each fight their personal battles with the support of the other ladies. And while they go through these challenges, their friendship is the glue that binds them together and sees them to their unique victories, one of which is bittersweet.

The book is well written. The plot develops chronologically. The characters develop well. I found it easy to follow the story lines of each character from where they started, to going through their challenges, to overcoming them, and learning from them. I like that the author wrote the book this way instead of using flashback which at times makes a book a bit confusing. I also like that the author, through her characters, is teaching us life lessons that we tend to compromise on. Embry teaches us about the value of self-discovery, self-love, and genuine friendship. The book also teaches about understanding ours and other people's situations.

There is not much that I disliked about this book, except that it ended when I least expected it to. I was too engrossed in it to realise that I was nearing the end because I loved reading about these four ladies and felt like I knew them personally.

I came across only one grammatical error which does not make much of a difference to the story, but other than that the book is well edited. I therefore rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There is no profanity, and sexual activity is only alluded to. I recommend this book to those who love a story with mischief, humour, and a happy ending. Fair warning to the readers, the book contains themes of death, and suicide which some might find upsetting.
