REVIEW OF ADORNO Y SUS DOS FANTASMAS
By Cristina Guido
Adorno y sus dos fantasmas, by the author Manelick de la Parra Vargas, is a book that recounts his experiences as a foreign student of literature in the beautiful Paris of the 1970s. His simple routine takes an unexpected turn when, by chance of fate, he is forced to take care of an unknown apartment for several days and, what is more important, the mysterious cat that inhabits it without its owners.

In that place, he finds the perfect library for a student of Letters: A library full of the most relevant works of world literature, each one meticulously covered with a leather flap and the letter “J” carved on the spine. From there, he follows clues to discover the name of the owner of that literary relic, at the same time that he divides himself between his student activities, the company of the beautiful Claudette, and the care of the aristocratic cat with a peculiar name, convinced that “J” could be a considerable figure in world literature.

It is an autobiographical-fictional story in which both styles are very well combined. In my opinion, it has many positive aspects: A very well accomplished work in which the author makes use of humor, irony, and sarcasm with a certain simplicity typical of his age without falling into excesses; it generates the perfect level of suspense that encourages you to continue finding out with him who the mysterious owner of the apartment could be; it also describes very well the Paris of the 1970s, with its decadence and charm alike. The story promises a lot from its inception and does not disappoint as it unfolds, with an equally well-achieved outcome, which guarantees a good taste in your mouth until its last letter.

I enjoyed everything about this book. I can not find a single negative point in the work. It seems to me that the book is very well written and edited, the story does not drag on unnecessarily, the plot unfolds properly without giving the story so many laps, and the outcome meets the reader's expectations.

For all the above, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It is an entertaining and original story, with an adequate dose of mystery and suspense that, in my opinion, will be enjoyed by adolescents and adult audiences of any age, which at some point will feel identified with the simplicity and reactions of the main character. I believe that this work is aimed at those who enjoy light reading without neglecting good humor and irony. Readers who enjoy more sober and darker stories should avoid this book.
