Review of Backcomb & Tattoo
[Following is a volunteer review on a transitional novel "Backcomb and Tattoo" by Shea R. Embry]
Reading Shea R. Embry's book is a reminiscent to one of my favorite authors Danielle Steele. Backcomb and Tattoo is a mind blowing and wonderful novel all about finding love and unlikely friendships worth the while. This book will have you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to come next. The way the author describes the life of each of her four main characters is remarkable. It's no trouble imagining the four of them on their escapades.
The story is packaged with each character's problems, Rachael and her long marriage with an absent husband who cares more about his career than her, Jesi is free spirited and well traveled woman, Nicole an attractive young woman who just came out of an abusive relationship and my personal favorite character Aunt Mary Opal with her youthful spirit and feisty nature to keep her friends laughing has her own secret and mysterious life. These problems bring them together and show how they care for each other.
In the beginning of the book, Rachael meets Aunt Mary Opal shortly before her mother's death. After a few months while traveling, Rachael met Jesi. The three later made a tradition called the "ladies light luncheon,"where they come up with recipes, go grocery shopping and cook together. Nicole later became a fourth member after stumbling upon the trio at a supermarket, on one of the most tragic nights of her life. From almost getting arrested to discovering new love and friendship. Shea R. Embry did a great job showing every character's perspectives.
Even with no familiarity with some themes, I was able to emphasize with the characters. The author had a very good balance of emotions throughout the entire novel. Hoping not to spoil anything, when Rachael makes a decision on page 32, near the end of chapter 2 where she had intention of going anywhere with her sisters. This is a very sensitive time for all of them and she could have given them the benefit of the doubt, anyone might argue otherwise.
I enjoyed the storytelling style, the writing style is consistent and pleasant. There are few scenes that focus more on love than physical sex, there is also a bit of swearing which does fit the characters using it. A realistic story that shows that terrible things can be made bearable by having good friends. This book is a definite read for young adults and people who are above that age group. Interesting in anything with a healthy mix of fantasy and realism humor. Give "Backcomb and Tattoo," a try and you will thank me later.I am giving it a 4 out of 4 stars.
