Shea R Embry builds her story Backcomb & Tattoo around four ladies, through whom critical issues that affect women in different spheres of life are presented. Rachael, a character in the book, opens the world of fantasy to the reader's mind by being in a situation that will repeat itself. Meeting up with Aunt Mary Opal a more experienced portrait is painted. She is like a god mother to the three young ladies since she guides them into making better decisions in their lives. She's got the ladies backs at all times. The tradition of sharing of drinks enables the ladies to get out of sticky situations. When Rachael introduces Jesi to Aunt Mary Opal the circle of friends grows but it's yet to be complete. It's not long before Nicole joins the picture by literally bumping into them. The unique bond they share makes them to fight till the end of the book to keep the fire of their love and care for each other burning.

Shea R Embry brings out the theme of secrecy in a skillful manner, that would make the reader to always want to know more of what is going to happen next. The book gives a euphoric feeling to the reader to always continue without stopping. Another positive aspect about the book, is the way vivid illustrations have been used to give an out of this world experience since, in various chapters of the book the readers emotions are invoked.

One thing I did not like about the book is the way some of the chapters were too short, I feel like more could have been said in those chapters. The other aspect that was not to my liking was the theme of death, the story starts with a melancholic mood and still ends in it. In my opinion the lowest points about the story revolve around death and lose of relations among the characters.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars since the book was clearly professionally edited and also because I did not find any errors in the book be it grammar errors or typo errors. Another reason as to why I give this book 4 stars is because the book was not only thrilling to read but also quite informative, some of the issues raised in the book are currently affairs in the real world.

I would recommend this book to people who ascribe to the feminist's school of thought, to members of the LGBTQ community, to psychologists and also to people who have gone through any form of abuse in their relationships be it physical or psychological. These kind of audiences will find the book more relatable to them.
