The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles is a riveting story which centers around the life of a complicated woman, her obstinate nature, and the intricacies of the relationships she found herself.

Lucy Macmiel, a brilliant lawyer was an adopted child. Lucy had always felt like an outsider with her foster family even though her sister, Elizabeth, was kind to her. Her father, A.J Macmeil, hid the fact that Lucy was his illegitimate daughter whom he had with a Puerto Rican woman outside his marriage to Agnes. She never had any real emotional attachment to her family not until she met Luke, a surgeon who worked with her father, and formed a relationship with him.

Complicated as she was, she was never satisfied with her relationship with Luke and ended up having an affair outside their marriage. She fell in love with Hower Bain who was her client, and this cost her, her job and entire career. She abandoned her family, marriage, and daughter to be with her lover, but this was the beginning of a long line of wrong choices she made.

Despite the turn of events with his marriage to Lucy, Luke was determined to raise Jennifer, giving her the love, he knew Lucy was incapable of. He fell in love with Lucy's sister, Elizabeth and together they built a family. Lucy travelled to Africa to be with her lover but eventually must flee for her life. She always turned away from what she knew to be the true nature of her lover, Hower Bain.

The Spirit of Want by Williams H. Coles is the story of a woman who never knew how to love because she never allowed herself to feel loved by her foster family. This was the foundation of a series of unfortunate events for her aided by the decisions she made. Fortunately, Luke was able to gather his life back together as he moved on with Elizabeth.

The book is a depiction of what happens in real life relationships, families, and the emotional struggles of adult life. There are numerous wants but in the end our choices still shape our lives.

I particularly loved the professional editing of the book and the attention to detail in every scene and chapter. The descriptions of every scenario were accurate, and it gives you a sense of the natural environment though out the characters' journey. I, therefore, rate The Spirit of Want by Williams H. Cole 4 out of 4 stars. I highly recommend this book to young adults and families to understand how to navigate and build relationships.
