When Tom finds his ex-wife Ruth standing on his doorstep with a thirteen-year-old girl named Sarah claiming to be his granddaughter he finds himself in an odd predicament as he and his friend William and his daughter Myra had been packing for an important hiking trip. After much contemplation, they agreed to take Sarah along with them. But Tom has his work cut out for him as Sarah is not only ornery but stubborn as well, traits inherited from her late mother. Things take a turn for the worst when Sarah disappears for eight days and returns all battered and bruised. She has also lost a finger and tells them a mind-boggling tale of an adventure that she has undergone, one which is hard to believe but seems very real. Tom is now considered unfit to be her guardian by authorities and Sarah is sent back to her grandmother to stay. Tom now has to find a way to save his granddaughter from being sent away and that can only be possible with an artifact that has been in his possession for many years which could prove that Sarah is not insane and could also save their national park from being mined.

"Strong Heart", written by Charlie Sheldon is a phenomenal novel that will have you wanting to sit and finish it in one go. The way that Sarah was portrayed in the novel was very insightful into the life of a 13-year-old girl about to transition into womanhood. The struggles and hardships that she has faced have been portrayed very realistically and it makes you feel as if you are in the novel itself.

There were parts of the book that I disliked. The book contains kidnapping, violence, and abuse. In my opinion, the fact that the author has chosen to add parts where women were struck when orders were not followed was very sexist, however, based on the way the plot of the book has been, it is justifiable as in that era there were no such thing as gender equality. There may be sensitive readers that may find these parts to be offensive.

" Strong Heart" is truly an outstanding novel that has been edited professionally and deserves to be rated 4 out of 4 stars .

This novel is not for sensitive readers or young children. I would recommend this book for young and mature adults that would be able to handle the contents of this book.
