Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is almost a journal-like narration about 4 friends’ annual adventures called 'Man Mission' over the course of 15 years. Their rugged, tough and, manly adventures include the mountainous Harper’s Pass Trail in New Zealand, vast oceans of the Andaman Sea, Thailand, all the way to freezing, toe-numbing Iceland and many more remarkable places around the globe. Although so, the book is not only about the challenging, nerve-wracking adventures but also incredibly weaved with the narrator’s family and work life, the struggles of expectations held for a man in this world, the stoic nature of male friendships, and so forth.

The author addressed the rigid nature of being a man and showcased the unspoken expectations of how a man is supposed to be invincible to life struggles, sacrificing anything and everything, all the while bearing emotions that should never be expressed outwardly and the effects it eventually has on a person and relationship, which is truly a heavy topic. But dare I say Eytan Uliel did it immaculately. The author exposes the narrator’s psychological workings, his thoughts and feelings, however negative or heartless they are, and his struggles to live a satisfying and fulfilled life as a friend, husband, and father. Thus, building truly flawed and interesting characters and relationships, which are closer to reality.

In terms of narration, I truly liked the idea of interweaving the adventures and the occurrences of everyday life, which brings to light the reality of the narrator’s life. I also loved how the adventures served as turning points or eye-opening moments for the narrator, and the messages the author conveyed just go with the plot and are not forced onto the readers, which shows the great writing skills of the author. I liked the characters and their relationships as they were well-developed and interesting. In addition, conversations, banters and humor between characters ebb and flow naturally. The detailed and amazing descriptions paired with the easy and light read, made the story all the more compelling to go through. Needless to say, there was nothing I disliked about this book.

I would rate Man Mission by Eytan Uliel 4 out of 4 stars. The story-telling was incredible and the book is well-edited. It is not a boring story of a man going through his life, but a mission where the readers venture deep into all the aforementioned complex topics in an interesting manner and with ease.

I would recommend this book to teenagers and adults, especially those who are interested not only in action and adventure but also in growth and life fulfillment.
