Review of Strong Heart
Strong Heart, by Charlie Shelden made for a thoroughly enjoyable reading. Set in the picturesque Northwest of USA in the areas around Seattle, Vancouver, and Alaska right up to the Bering Straits, it explores the origins of the first settlers here. The book runs 2 parallel stories side by side. The present day is connected through a story of the region thousands of years back. Sara is a troubled orphan and the main character of the story. It is through her character that the past is connected to the present. Stubborn and Gritty, Sara ends up on her Grandfather Tom's doorstep for the first time just as he is about to leave for a backpacking trip with his friend William and his daughter, Myra.
Myra has a background in anthropology and is a local of the area. She is, therefore, very attached to he local traditions and customs. This group is strongly against mining operations about to start in the region. When the group stumbles on an ancient artifact dating to the last ice age, they have an opportunity to stop the mining operations altogether by having the area declared as of archaeological importance. The story revolves around this theme with the mining company and Sara's group at loggerheads culminating in a serious fight near the end of the story.
The story line and the setting can be pictured as a great movie. References to the sea journeys as well as the backpacking adventures speak of the background of the author. In today's shift towards an Eco-friendly earth, this book is a must read.
The positive aspects of the story were the strong story line that kept the reader on edge to the very end. The very picturesque scenery of the region was very well highlighted in the book. It will serve to attract a segment of adventure tourists to the area. The book provides an interesting history of the Seattle, Vancouver, Alaska connections through the ages. Sergie, a later character further adds authenticity to the historical perspective. His archaeological and scientific expertise clashes with the traditional views of Myra. Their love, hate relationship is explored with humor.
Sara's story of the past was a bit drawn and overly descriptive in the first part but just when you start getting bored, the story shifts to the present at the perfect time. Apart from that, one is glued to the story line through out. The descriptions of the scenery will seem better visually, perhaps if one makes a movie. One can understand, however, scenic and location descriptions being drawn in books.
I will grade the book 4 out of 4 mainly because the story keeps you on edge throughout and one wants to finish it once started. There were hardly any editorial errors which made the reading smooth. The recommended audience are Anthropologists, Historians, and Adventure Tourists. It is also a good read for those who want to familiarize themselves with the Eco-environment being focused on today.
