Aunt Mary Opal, the main character in the book Backcomb & Tattoo by Shea R. Embry, is a remarkable woman who is loving, wise, and has secrets. The three young women that she met in this late stage of her life formed the inner circle of her friends. They have a special bond of understanding each other’s souls. Although there is a big age gap between the three young ladies and Aunt Mary Opel, their friendship is deep, based on respect and love. This is a book that captured the loyalty between friends. This loyalty, accompanied with respect, brings an element of secrecy to the friendship since certain information will not be general knowledge amongst the friends. The secrets originate from the information of their feelings and experiences that they shared between members of the group. All these secrets create questions by the reader and an expectation of how it will unfold and on how far each woman is prepared to sacrifice their silence, even if it means that they will live with their conscience forevermore. In this context, the question is still, what is the difference between suicide, murder, euthanasia, and natural death based on your conscience and your value system?

The positive aspects of this book were the sensitivity, love, and respect between women in friendship. It is a tender story about understanding the inner soul and accepting each other’s decisions, but do not have to agree with it. The three young ladies, Rachel, Nicole, and Jesi, are vibrant and young and bring unusual situations with laughter and humor to the story.

This is an entertaining, easy-to-read book, and I found nothing negative in this book. Although it is not negative, the relationship between Aunt Mary Opel and her two daughters was something to think about. Aunt Mary Opel has a wonderful relationship with her new friends but could not achieve a better relationship between herself and her daughters. At the beginning of the book, the writer mentioned that Aunt Mary Opel was very bossy towards them, but this bossiness did not show in her friendships. Was this an oversight by the writer? Read the book carefully and decide for yourself.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars and base my rating on the portrayal of sensitive issues like dealing with cancer, either yourself or someone dear to you. Issues like making peace with the emotional pain of your past, and last, the debate about euthanasia. Shea R. Embry has the writing talent to bring these emotions into words.

I recommend this book to all audiences but believe that females will have a deeper understanding of the friendship between the four ladies.
