While still studying in law school, two young men dream of having annual trips to do adventurous outdoor activities and try exotic foods. That dream starts to become a reality when Sam for the first time asks the author to go for their first annual trip to New Zealand during their days off. That’s when Man Mission is born and would continue for the next fifteen years. For the next years, their other two friends, Daniel and Alec, would also join them in the Man Mission. Together they fight their fear by doing challenging activities, such as biking, kayaking, and hiking, in places with beautiful scenery.

In his book, Man Mission, Eytan Uliel recounts all the trips they have done over a span of fifteen years in many faraway countries. They are just young, unmarried men when they start their Man Mission. Along the journey of Man Mission, one by one they get married and have children. They also work full-time, so they have little time for themselves. These annual trips become a moment for them to stay away for a while from the endless domestic chores and the madness at work to calm their minds. This is also a moment for them to feel carefree like boys again, to shout as loud as they want, and to act as crazy as they wish.

This book also shows a true friendship. When any of them faces a calamity or has a mental breakdown, they would help each other. The author himself experiences a lot of sorrow mainly due to his marriage conflict and dissatisfaction at work. He often feels like a robot doing his job in front of the computer screen all day, which is something that I believe a lot of people can relate to. At some point, he feels so depressed and becomes doubtful about how to be a real man. He tries to rise from his downfall and rebuilds his life. The Man Mission becomes one of the important tools for him to contemplate on his condition and seek wisdom.

There were many aspects I liked about this book. First, it surely gave me a lot of insight into the unique cultures of the different places the author and his friends had visited. Second, I could relate to Eytan’s predicaments, such as feeling overwhelmed at work, feeling worthless, trying to look okay in front of people despite being sad, and having difficulty communicating his true feelings to other people. Knowing that there was a person who had gone through similar plights helped me to not feel alone and thus made me feel better about myself. Third, I learned so many things from this book. It enlightens me that marriage is not as easy as it seems; there must be ample sacrifice, forgiveness, good communication, and unconditional love. As a woman, I find it beneficial to see men’s perspectives about things like marriage life or just their feelings; it helps me to understand people better. Moreover, it is also nice to see the difficulties middle-aged adults face and learn from their experiences.

There was nothing I disliked about the book. It was professionally edited since I only found one error. I really enjoyed reading this book, so I rate it four out of four stars. This book is perfect for those who want to get some insight into what it means to be real men or true humans in general. People who right now feel burnt out, lonely, depressed, or worthless, might find this book helpful in making them feel better about themselves. People who like to read about adventurous trips in many different countries might also enjoy this book.

I am fascinated by the book's plot and how the four friends always managed to travel together. I will make sure to read it sometime soon, especially for the different perspectives on how men might think about different topics. Thank you for the insightful and extremely enjoyable review!
