Review of Strong Heart
Perhaps dreams explore physical and spiritual landscapes in ways more wonderful than we could begin to imagine. In Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon, a man named Tom’s unknown, 13-year-old granddaughter (Sarah) appears on his doorstep as he and his friends prepare for a trek into Olympic National Park in Washington State. Tom’s friend, William (a.k.a. Walleye), convinces Tom to bring Sarah along, so they embark on their journey into the park. Myra, William’s daughter, describes the park, their native land, as “a land of magic, history, and legend. A place of myth, ancient stories, ancient people” (Location 124). Sarah comes to realize this truth more keenly than any of them, in a way that is at once unexpected and natural.
Strong Heart is rich in storytelling and mystery, as well as the astounding beauty of nature. The wilderness of our planet surfaces our vulnerability, and Sheldon’s characters are wonderfully faithful to this truth. The layers of storytelling are woven together beautifully, and Sheldon dives deeply into the complexity of human existence on our planet. Strong Heart evokes many questions about the endless mysteries and possibilities of life, and sparks fires of wonder at what realities might be revealed when we cast aside our fears and doubts about the unknown worlds outside and within us.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have only positive things to say about it. When I read, I hope to be transported to amazing places, meet characters I might call friends, and discover new perspectives on life. I found all of these in Strong Heart, and I look forward to reading the next two books in the series, Adrift and Totem.
I rate Strong Heart 4 out of 4 stars. I greatly enjoy exploring uncharted territories of thought and experience, so I was thrilled to explore this tale. It was incredibly interesting and I had never before read anything like it. Sheldon is a wonderful storyteller and his love for humanity and our planet is vastly evident in the pages of this book. The book was also professionally edited, which allowed for greater immersion into the story.
I recommend Strong Heart to anyone who yearns for their limiting beliefs to be broken in order to find a vast, endless expanse of wonder beyond them. Also, I recommend it for all those who have ever felt unable and unworthy of loving or being loved fully. I recommend this book to you in hope that you will experience a refreshed sense of wonder at the nature around and within you, as I did.
