The book, Strong Heart, by Charlie Sheldon, is a story of a young girl of thirteen who finds herself alone as her mother has been killed and her stepfather leaves to go to Europe on a business trip. She is shipped off to her maternal grandmother's house for a summer vacation while her father is in Europe. After caring for the child for a few days, the girl is too much to deal with and she brings the girl to her ex-husband's (her paternal grandfather) house to stay and thus share the parenting duties of this particularly headstrong young woman.

The story then begins as her grandfather, his friend and his friend's daughter, are preparing to go camping to the place where he had buried his grandfather a number of years ago and had taken one of his grandfather's personal belongings home with him and he feels the need to return this item to be buried with his grandfather. They all agree that there is no choice but to bring the girl with them on this journey. As they are all Native Americans, the book follows them on this spiritual journey to his grandfather's burial site and along the way they discover that Sarah, the granddaughter, has a lot more to her than just a willful, headstrong teenager. What should be a nice relaxing camping trip turns into a fight for survival after Sarah gets lost and goes on a spiritual journey of her own, a run-in with surveyors who have a claim deed and are trying to find a particular type of ore and will allow no one or nothing to stand in their way, and forest fires threatening to cut off their escape route.

I found the book to be very positive in that it gives one an insight into what may have been many thousands of years ago when this country was first settled.

I cannot really cite any negativity to the book and look forward to reading the other two books in this series.

I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 4. While there were a couple of grammatical errors it was not enough to reduce the rating of the book overall. I would recommend the book to everyone who is interested in ancient origins and the beginning of civilization in this country and elsewhere.
