Review of Strong Heart
Ruth Fletcher visits her ex-husband Tom on a rainy night and saddles him with a surprise and responsibility. William and Myra are forced to change their plans to support Tom. Sarah tossed to and fro gets introduced to a historic and magical world in her journey of self discovery and survival. Myra and Sergei two different individuals with different beliefs meet up after an incidence. Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a story focused on Sarah’s Idiosyncrasies, her journey and determination. Tom, Myra, Sergei and William’s role and their loss in the search for meaning and ancestry. Did Myra and Sergei find love? Initially lost, inflexible and rude, how did Sarah turn out, whom and what was instrumental in her journey? What did they discover? Who is Fletcher? How does he feature in the scheme of the book, what does he stand for? This is for you to discover as you turn the pages of this book.
I love that Charlie is able to talk about archaeology in a simplified way. Also the fact that he mentions the preservation of history and archaeological sites from exploitation using real life examples found in the area around the Olympic National Park. The author also mentioned how some persons are deliberate about using extreme measures including destroying evidence in order to continue exploitation of both the land and people. The author mentions how historical evidences of an ancestor was destroyed making it difficult to prove that the site is an historic site, thereby, making the land available for other activities for personal gain. Charlie also brought to light the societal challenge of sexual abuse especially the aspect where wives turn blind eye to abuse of younger children in their care as a result of either fear or thought of saving their marriages.
I almost got confused with too much detail of Sarah’s first narration of her encounter in the other world thought the exceptional writing style was able to bring me to a place of understanding before the end of the book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I found neither grammatical nor typing errors and it teaches life lessons. The Archaeological theme makes learning about origins and history interesting.
I recommend this book to people who find a mix of archaeological evidences embedded in mystical/magical stories of the Native Americans interesting. Also to people who don't mind reading some gruesome details as you will find some in the struggle for survival scenes. Reading in between the line gives some insight to societal ills and the extent a person or group of persons can go to cover up ills, manipulate the law and humans in order to continue dominating.
