Review of Man Mission
Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is an incredibly exhilarating journey encapsulated in a book. It spans fifteen years and stars four close friends. The story follows Sam, Alec, Daniel and our narrator, who remains unnamed but is presumed to be the author himself, as they join each other in undertaking fantastic ‘manly’ missions.
The premise of the book seems to be quite straightforward, and from the very first line, we are hooked onto the story. It is intriguing and makes us want to read further about this strange mission the narrator has found himself on. The Man Missions start in New Zealand with one friend, then continue to Japan, parts of Australia and so many other fascinating destinations. The four friends undertake various activities like kayaking, cycling and trekking. All of these missions are jam-packed with adrenaline-inducing tales of adventure.
However, the book is more about just those Man Missions, although those are the most important component. I enjoyed reading about the backstory of how the missions actually began, as it gave a nostalgic look into the basis of the book. The story is also interspersed with the personal experiences of the author, such as maintaining friendships, introducing his significant other to his social circle, uncertainty about switching jobs and more. These events are something that many people reading will relate to, which fosters a connection between the author and the reader.
The author has done a remarkable job of getting the reader immersed in the book. I absolutely adored how there was a map with quirky doodles included at the beginning of the chapters that give us an inkling of what is to follow. The first paragraph of every part was a scene from the middle of the Man Mission, a simple yet effective hook to get the reader absorbed.
Frankly speaking, I could not find anything to fault with this book. It is edited wonderfully well, and the writing is humorous. The author has described his experiences in such a way that it feels like we are living them right alongside him. Another thing that I appreciated was that he did not shy away from sharing his own inadequacies on the trip, and how he overcame them.
I would rate Man Mission 4 out of 4 stars. I would definitely recommend it to all the boys who are just starting out in life, as well as anyone looking for a light-hearted, fun read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and it is sure to keep a smile on your face.
