Review of Strong Heart
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon, told the story of Sarah, who until her unexpected appearance at Tom’s, was his an unknown 13-year old granddaughter. She appeared at a time when Tom, his friend William, and William's daughter Myra, had prepared for a backpacking – a trip Tom had wanted to undertake so that a spear arrow would be buried at his father's grave whom died many years back on backpacking trip in the park. After some debate, Sarah was included in the trip.
Myra tried to convince Tom not to bury the spear arrow because of its importance.
While in the park, some heated exchange between Tom and his granddaughter Sarah, led to her disappearance. Eight days of search were in vain. When hope was lost; Sarah appeared, amid rain and thunder; injured and tired. But she returned with a story , a story that would form some hypotheses. A story they find hard to believe. The trip was unsuccessful since the spear arrow was lost, not buried along Tom’s father and yet , unavailable for dating. Tom put it on Sarah or RANGERS who were also at the forest doing the bidding of Lynch. But the appearance of Sarah overshadowed the lost at that moment. Upon returning home, Tom was dismissed from his work and Sarah was taken away from him for his irresponsibility. She was handed back to her grandmother Ruth. Meanwhile William and Myra returned to their normal life. But before returning to his work, William visited Tom’s where Sarah confided with him that she new where the spear arrow was. Tom found the handle of the spear arrow and handed it to William whose friend specialised in dating techniques with the hope that it could be dated - it was only what they hang their entire hope on, of proving the existence of human at the park which will consequently stop turning it into mining site by the Lynch company. But by the turn of events, while at Ruth's, Sarah was abused by Lynch, her step grandfather. Being a natural fighter, Sarah fought back, injured him and fled to Myras'.
This happened while Tom and William were exploring the possibility of taken Sarah on yet another trip whose purpose was to retrieve the original atlatl so that it could be properly dated and use against Lynch’s plan of turning the park into the mining site. Sergei, who was the only addition to the previous trip, is a professional DNA. He quickly developed excelent rapport with Sarah, having became interested in her story. His poor chemistry with Myra threatened the quest and had him thinking of withdrawing from the journey. Fortunately, they reconciled and his good relationship with Sarah proved helpful throughout the journey. Even though, both trips were unsuccessful, Sarah's story, coupled with Sergei's curiosity, ingenuity and excellent deductive reasoning answered and posed many questions which gave them fresh hopes of succeeding.
I can point out many positives from this book. The exceptional storytelling ability of the author. How the author, Charlie Sheldon identified and named the characters from Sarah's story using their individual features and or habits was intelligent. The imaginative manner in which Sarah's story was interpreted using Sergei's knowledge, and Tom and William's experience was an intelligent conclusion.
There is nothing negative in this book as far as i can tell. I was engrossed from start to finish of reading it.
I rate this book four out of four . I did not rate it lower because the book was exceptionally well edited, is captivating and well organized. I recommend this book to those who are interested in the history of origin of man and who want to master the art of storytelling. People who love adventure, will particularly find this book interesting.
