Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a story spanning almost two decades in the lives of four friends. The story is narrated by one of these four men as they go on yearly adventures across the globe. The idea for these annual adventures starts out as a fanciful idea which over time forms into a tradition that none of them are willing to forgo. These Man Missions and the silly rules the members come up with somehow become the constants in their ever-changing lives.

The narrator in Man Mission divides each chapter telling us about what adventure they are on, then switches to the changes the members have experienced in the previous year. They start out as hopeful young men, dating or on the way to the altar to women they are head over heels in love with when the first Man Mission goes underway. Life seems to be going in the right direction generally. The men adjust to what is expected of them as men in their view. However, the urge to throw off the rules for just a few days a year is too strong to resist. Hence, the funny, ridiculous, and sometimes dangerous trips ensue to exotic locations such as an ill-prepared hiking trip in New Zealand, kayaking in dangerous ocean currents in Fiji, coming face to face with a roaring lion in Africa, and many other experiences. In between each Man Mission trip their lives curve and twist and even seem to derail at times as they navigate family, work, and inner callings that just won’t let them be.

I found this book to be a gem in the sense that it was like lifting a heavy curtain to look at what goes on in the mind of the modern man. Readers, especially women, would greatly benefit from experiencing the inner worlds of these four men to get a sense of what the opposite gender goes through internally. The characters seem to be going about their lives wearing the right armors as everyone expects of them and their individuality begs to be let out. This book showed me that at the heart of each human is the same inescapable force that wants to express life and we must listen. I empathized with the blunders and miscalculations the men make all in the hopes of balancing the harsh outside world and its demands with the life inside them. It was both painful and life-affirming at the same time.

Another positive aspect of this book is the adventures the men pursue with gusto. The descriptions of the exotic places and the emotions and insights they stir in the men will make readers eager to find their own adventures. The humor and camaraderie among these friends were a delight to read about. In my opinion, the story strikes the right balance between the adventure and emotional depth of the characters. I did not find any negative points in this story.

I give Man Mission a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I did not find any errors or typos in the entire book. I recommend this book to travel lovers and any women who would like to understand the pressures and struggles of modern men.
