Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a beautiful story of growth, friendship, adventure and learning to love. What is a 'man mission' exactly? This is what Uliel refers to his adventures with his best friends as. On these missions Uliel and his three best friends from college grow up together and start to discover who they are. They learn how to face and overcome unexpected challenges.

The idea first came to light when the men were in university. The narrator tells his new friend Sam about his idea to travel the world, going to new and exotic locations every year. This idea turns into reality a few years after they graduate. Sam calls the narrator and insists that they're both in need of a break from their real lives. Once both of them are in agreement, they're off to New Zealand where together they experience some unforeseen challenges. Already the audience can start to see them learning and growing. Eventually over the years and many different trips their two other best friends, Daniel and Alec, join them on their adventures. Together they learn to navigate their own personal lives and problems.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book. I thought it may be a travelogue of sorts. However, it wasn't anything like that. It was a beautiful story of friends learning and discovering who they are. What I really enjoyed about this book was the fact that we were able to see all the different interactions of the men and their reactions to all the new people they met. It was refreshing to see them gain new perspectives on their own lives after seeing other people's lives and how they differ.

I also fount it very interesting to see South Africa from their perspectives as I am South African. It was unusual to see the country included in a story like this. Another thing that really added to my enjoyment of the story was the professional editing. I did find the trips to be slightly repetitive but the author did well to break them up and make them different enough each time.

While I didn't quite know what to expect going into this book I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was quite refreshing to see an idea for a book that I never quite have before. It was very easy to read and I couldn't wait to get back to it each time I stopped. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

As a reader who mostly enjoys fantasy novels I was quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It is because of that I recommend this book to all readers. I think even readers who are not used to this sort of book will be very pleasantly surprised. I don't think this book would be suitable for younger readers as there are instances where quite strong language is used.
