The book Strong Heart written by Charlie Sheldon is a journey into an American Indian family, and the hierarchy that has been established. The dynamics of this American Indian family gets tested when an unknown granddaughter is dropped off on the doorstep of the matriarch of the family. The story weaves us through a journey that starts on a cold rainy night in the Pacific Northwest to an adventure in the wilderness that join generations of a tribal family.

William and Tom, brothers are joined by Myra (William’s daughter) on a camping trip to the Olympic Peninsula wilderness in Washington State. A surprise knock on their door during a torrential rainstorm leads to a revelation none of them saw coming. Sarah a 13-year-old teenager has been dropped off by yet another adult in her life because of her unruly, sullen disposition. She is malnourished, unmotivated and has a disjointed attitude to add to the family dynamics. Unexpectedly, in the end Sarah is the one that leads the family on the adventure through the family history that ties current day events together.

The author has an ability to weave the past and obsolete family traditions to the modern-day conveniences. He has an uncanny writing style that takes you back on an adventure true to the primitive tribal hierarchy, marital traditions as well as, following the full moon as a guidepost. Mr. Sheldon has taken his research of the wildlife patterns, archeological clues, and the moon patterns with the position of the stars to lead these travelers to safety from the distant lineage to today’s modern family. You certainly will find this book a page turner and wanting more when it concludes.

This book has been put on my all-time liked books list. Mr. Sheldon does a great job of weaving excitement, humor, tradition, and legacy in one adventure packed book all the way to the end.
The research done to compile this book weaves the old members of a small family to the young and surprisingly the older members of the family experience and learn from Sarah. Each character of the book lends an intricate part of the who, what, why, when, and where. There are no fluff characters in this story but there are surprises as to some of the characters that were unexpected. The maps at the front of the book were great reference tools for me several times as I was able to chart their journey. The authors description of the mountains, the vegetation, the lakes and even the wild animals was extraordinary and kept me turning the page.

I will give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book for old readers, especially those interested in learning about American Indian culture and the strong weaved traditions. I recommend this book for the young audience as well, I believe a young person especially one that likes to read, would get an upfront view of tradition, loyalty and family.
