This book was truly wonderful!
Rarely does one come across an entrancing yet highly intellectual fiction that truly informs, educates and captures the reader, yet Strong Heart successfully did so.
By following Tom, William, Myra and Sarah, Charlie Sheldon creates a world where one can safely learn about the Indigenous of Western North America, past and present. Healthy and passionate debates share multiple narratives and arguments and promote discourse with compassion. The scientific method is reviewed with a reminder that belief and science do not have to be divorced, but that true scientists are open to theories being disproven with evidence. It acknowledges the unknown, and how important the desire to continue exploring is to unraveling our own history and past.
Within the same book, he also entwines a mystery of time travel and mysticism to explore the past. We explore enrapturing scenes of early Indigenous life, the challenges, the dangers and the ingenuity needed to overcome them.
Likewise, Charlie Sheldon does not shy away from the challenges faced by modern Indigenous people, from custody challenges, to domestic abuse. His ability to do this, evoke the horrors many families face, while correcting them with other imperfect, yet loving family members (by blood and otherwise) allows for a safe way to acknowledge our own imperfections.
I applaud this work of blended historical and present-day fiction.
