[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "So What if you have failed! Be Inspired" by Ferleen Verneuil- Joseph.]
So What if you have failed! Be Inspired by Ferleen Verneuil-Joseph is a fast and short motivational book that could give anyone some hope on a rainy day. The author uses his personal experience to power up this whole book. The book was written during the pandemic and is meant to help people get their lives back in balance.
The book is divided into two sections. The first one is filled with positive affirmations, while the second one reminds one about the connection with God through quotes from the scripture. Both sections try to bring body and mind to the same level of comfort and awareness in order to see positive change.
First of all, I enjoyed the author’s energetic and effective style. His straightforwardness made me question my productivity level and motivated me to do more. Affirmations like “You are NOT dead yet!” (page 5) or “Try not to sleep for too long; you don’t want to miss out on the spicy things in life” (page 3) were my favorites because they were so raw and direct. I also liked the subjects that were approached, such as unemployment, loss, and betrayal, which are somehow darker than those of your usual motivational book. The author acknowledges that sometimes everyone will feel down no matter what, which makes the reader feel safe and understood.
Unfortunately, the book is not edited so well, as I found more than ten errors in such a short book. The errors could ruin the author’s effort at inspiring others. Personally, I felt like the lack of professional editing considerably affected my reading experience. Besides, I was also bothered by the capitalized words in the text. I understand that the author wished to highlight some important words, but there were too many. Also, I didn’t feel like it was really needed. I also wished that the book was organized based on the subject instead of being just a long list of affirmations. The current organization makes everything less important and easier to forget. Another thing that bothered me was the simplicity of some of the affirmations. As someone who is tired of seeing the same motivational quotes everywhere, I desire some more refined affirmations, which the book seems to lack at times. However, some people love and need simplicity, so that is just a personal opinion.
I decided to rate So What if you have failed 2 out of 4 stars because of the editing, the capitalized words, the organization, and the simplicity of the affirmations. If properly edited, this book could be a great source of motivation for anyone. I couldn’t rate it higher because I couldn’t enjoy it properly, but I also couldn’t rate it lower because it has many positive things. I recommend this book to people who are feeling down and need a boost, but also to religious people. People who enjoy self-help and motivational books should definitely try it. Because the book uses quotes from the Bible, I think it would mostly be suitable for Christians. The book has no profanities or graphic scenes, so it’s safer for any audience.
