Review of Man Mission
Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a story about four friends and ex-college mates over a fifteen-year period. Every year, they organise a two-week man mission or trip to have adventures and catch up on life. The trip idea was originally brought up by two friends in the group who were bored a few years into their law careers. The first trip kickstarts with an adventurous trek in New Zealand and from there birthed a tradition amongst the four men. This book is about friendship, adventure and action.
The four men take this trip annually to strengthen their bonds and also reflect on their personal lives as all four men are married. They talk about their love lives, parenting and also their careers. They also engage in activities like kayaking, sailing, cycling and hiking to show off their ruggedness, skills and manly strength. The story is narrated in first person point of view of the main character although he remained nameless throughout the book.
I enjoyed so many things about the book, the transitions between the flashbacks and the present, it just showed that the past and the are almost always intertwined in a way. Then, the main character’s lack of name made the book all the more exciting for me and gave the book an edge because I have never seen it anywhere. This book also highlights resilience and strength amongst the four men when on their Man Mission, I say this because they meet at crossroads and also sustain a lot of injuries but they keep going on. Also, I really liked how the author added diversity and cultures into the story, it shows that the author is mindful of his audience and generally, cares about the readers. Moreover, the book talks about growth and friendship between men in the purest form, they all make an effort to meet one another and engage in these relationship strengthening activities over the course of fifteen years. I would like to add that the author’s attention to detail was impeccable.
I have absolutely no negative comments about this story because I had a connection with the book and it glorifies friendship. It was an amazing read.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars because of how the story talks about friendship and growing together apart. This book was very well edited, and I would recommend this book to teenagers, young adults and adults or just to anyone who enjoys travels adventurous stories.
