Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is about youthful adventure, life and fun. Four friends, while in school, proposed embarking on adventurous travel and activities at an unknown date in the future, not knowing whether this daydream would come to reality. A few years later, with each of them leading different lives full of hopes and aspirations, their dream of going on a days-long, adventurous, exploring, challenging vacation comes to fruition, and they name it ‘Man Mission’. Amid different stages of transformation and growth, with the young boys becoming men and men becoming husbands and fathers with responsibilities, the book records fifteen years of the yearly ‘Man Mission’. Gradually, the yearly ritual takes on more meaning as it becomes a place of rejuvenation and peace apart from the daily lives each of the men leads. The story tells from a man’s perspective the struggles of a man’s life, the wins, the losses, redemption and hope. The friendship of the four men grew into a brotherhood of men who live through the uncertainties of life together. The author creatively paints life and growth through a man’s eye, drawing on friendship, fun, youthfulness, commitment and responsibility.

I enjoyed reading this book with its detailing of the characters' activities. The author, through a narrator, takes readers on several journeys with the characters to different corners of the world. The provision of detailed maps of the various adventures in the book also makes for an imaginative and unforgettable reading experience. The relevant allusion to religious text and wise quotes from philosophers gives an intellectual feel and interpretation to the characters' activities.

The narrative technique employed in this book makes it easily understandable, lively and interesting to read. The book is also professionally edited with an easy-to-read choice of words. It was, however, a little tasking to keep up with the names of several places mentioned in the book. Aside from this, I enjoyed embarking on an imaginative journey with the narrator.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because the book draws on the important theme of the life and emotional experiences of men in a world that sets high and sometimes unattainable expectations of them. This theme is told in a lively and interesting adventurous story.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading adventurous and imaginative stories. I also recommend the book to readers who struggle with the pressures of being a man. Readers of all ages and religious affinities would enjoy reading the book.
