Review of Buried in the Mississippi Mud
Buried in the Mississippi Mud by Chinna Dunigan is a "misery porn" which follows the life of a woman who is from Mississippi. She has been abused both physically and verbally throughout her life. The book shows the horror that some black women in America face and how some of those problems are created in their childhood by stereotypes and false doctrines and the misguided approach to helping them. It is an inspirational book that showcases the issues and burdens put upon these women throughout their life.
The book begins with the protagonist of the story being sexually abused by her husband because of his belief that she is cheating on him. The book goes back to when she was a child to show the events that took place which led to her being in that situation. The story shows the abuse she had as a child from guardians and the neglect from people who were meant to take care of her. The book also shows the result of such abuse and neglect, which in turn causes further results and it becomes a cycle, and how the cycle is worsened by lies and further abuse which are said and done to her.
The book has a lot of positive aspects. Most of these can be seen through the enlightenment the book brings. The book is enlightening about how some professional medical workers interfere in the life of teenage mothers and lecture them when they have no right to do such. These professionals feel they have the moral high ground to do so when most are not aware of the background of what happened. It was enlightening about the problems teenage mothers have to go through when they find out they are pregnant. Sometimes, they are berated instead of being cared for when they need it, and such experiences can traumatize such persons. It enlightened me about the level of physical and sexual abuse that young children go through at the hand of their guardians and how some people do not believe the children and do not react to such issues. The theme of absent-parenting was also discussed as well as the negatives it brings to a child. This book also shows how such experiences can seriously traumatize a person. The lack of paternal figures in children's lives was shown and how it can affect such a child's future decision-making.
I give the book a rating of three out of four stars. The book satisfied most of the main points it wanted to achieve. It portrayed the burdens which society pushes on black women and how they break due to this burden. The book also showed that such women could fight back and carry that burden and make themselves and those around them better. The protagonist showed that they do not have to conform to the norm of society, and even if they had to, they could stop. The book is not professionally edited, which was the only negative aspect I saw in the book. Therefore, I have removed a star from my rating.
I recommend this book to victims of rape. The book shows how a person can be able to overcome this atrocity and move on with their life. Also, I recommend the book to people who are in abusive relationships. The theme of abuse is well discussed in this novel and also the ability to overcome such problems and leave the relationship was discussed. I recommend the book as well to social welfare workers, as the book shows how such individuals can help a person greatly if they do their jobs right and also how they can hinder a person when doing their jobs haphazardly.
