Review of Man Mission
Many campus students daydream about fun adventures, good food, and experiences after campus. Unfortunately, duty, maturity, and responsibilities after campus wash the young, ambitious daydreams away. In Man Mission, Eytan Uliel gives a riveting account of all the adventures and dreams he and his friends make good on as thrill-seeking adults. Eytan is the main character and narrator of the adventure trips and life-changing moments his friend group goes through for over fifteen years. It all starts when Sam pushes Eytan to take a break from work so they can make good on their college dream of an annual trip. Sam’s insistence leads to the two friend’s first man mission to New Zealand. The drama, excitement, and bonding prove to be a foreshadowing of the next fourteen trips to foreign and exotic locations. Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a detailed chronicle about four college friends’ life experiences as they grow into impressive men of character.
I like the perspective of the book on male friendships. Sam and Etytan’s instant connection leads to a lifelong friendship that cements Sam’s place in the friend group. The life lessons that Etyan, Sam, Alec, and Daniel experience on their trips have a positive ripple effect on their relationships and lives. Sometimes the most impactful people are the friends who become family along the way. I also like the characters in the book. Eytan and his friends have honest and vulnerable connections with each other. It’s rare to come across a book that features and celebrates vulnerability in male friendships.
Another positive aspect is the unique writing style. I thought the book would be an autobiographical account of the author’s experiences, but he takes it to another level by writing the story like a fictional story. It made the reading experience thrilling and captivating. Furthermore, the missions are in chronological order and separate sections. I find this very helpful because I was able to focus on each adventure and internalize the lessons and impact of each mission.
I like several things about Man Mission. The storyline is unique. The author creates an atmosphere of honest, fun adventure. The content covers many social issues relating to men and their place in society. The editing is exceptional because I did not spot grammatical or plot errors. I did not dislike anything about the book. I rate Man Mission 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend Man Mission to young adults and adults. I would not recommend the book to readers below sixteen years old because there is the use of profanity. Readers looking to understand male friendships, vulnerability, and responsibilities will benefit from reading Man Mission.
