Review of McDowell
We all have friends who will do whatever it takes to get what they want. McDowell by William H. Coles follows Dr. Hiram, a surgeon with five children from three wives. Hiram was the sort of person that would do anything to get what he wanted, even if it meant he would have to betray his friends.
Hiram is one of the most respected surgeons in his hometown. After losing his second wife to breast cancer, Hiram gets married to Carole, whom he met in Denver. She already had two daughters, Tasha and Candice. Meanwhile, he had three children from his late wives: Ann, Sophie, and Billie. He had a foundation in Nepal from which he used the funds for his personal needs. He wanted to be elected President of the Board of Regents of the International College of Surgeons, and for this to happen, he convinced Michael that if he helped him, he would make him the executive director. Michael did all he could, and after Hiram won, he backstabbed Michael and gave this role to another doctor. Michael was now willing to do whatever it would take to get back to Hiram.
The author of this book left me speechless with this storyline. I love how he develops Hiram's character. A lot of people today are like Hiram, who don't care about others but their selfish deeds, and I hope that karma gets back at them. I learned a great deal about parenting when reading about how Hiram treated his children. He did all he could to show them he cared, even if he didn't know how to love someone other than himself. I must say that I haven't read a book with as much suspense as this one in a long time. I also fell in love with his children while reading this book.
There was nothing to dislike about this book. I admire how the protagonist transforms from a selfish, self-centred, uncaring man who abandoned his friend on the summit of a mountain to the ideal father that every child desires. I was surprised at how I went from hating Hiram's character to loving him and even making him my favourite character in this book. The storyline was very realistic and it was difficult to guess what would happen next, showing the author did a wonderful job. There was also a lot to learn from this novel about life. Whatever you do, one day you will be held accountable for it.
The author did an amazing job on this book. I saw this book playing out in my head. I can't imagine rating it anything less than 4 out of 4 stars. There were zero errors, showing it was exceptionally well-edited. I would recommend this book to people looking for books about redemption and growth in character and classical novels.
