Review of Man Mission
I started making notes at the beginning of reading this adventure-packed book Man Mission by Eytan Uliel and came with the expectation of hearing about four friends traveling which they most certainly did, however to my surprise the author gave me much more than I expected. This awesome book speaks about these friends who annually go on man missions as they have called it where they cut off from reality and do exhilarating yet dangerous missions that gave them pretty scars to show and a badge of manly honor. There are rules to follow when participating in these missions and as expected, not adhering to the rules has consequences. The initial conversation to start these trips happen when they are in college which scratched my internal love of trying different foods and traveling in search of these foods while also finding out more about other cultures, I became hooked instantly. There are a total of 15 trips made throughout the book and with each trip, these men put their lives at risk not knowing if they will make it back home safely. Each year is vastly different from the previous year's mission because these men go beyond their limiting fears. The activities include kayaking, riding, hiking, and much more. Along the way, they meet some wise men who share some of their wisdom and some who taught them life lessons just by being their authentic selves. Not to mention how the universal language is not a spoken one because they connected with some of these men without having to understand their native language. The author manages to capture his life in the book from college to work and family life, his style of writing feels like you're watching a series anxiously waiting to know what happens next.
The author shows how this life can be somewhat unpredictable and that the societal norms of what it means to be a man can be detrimental. He made it feel ok for men to get in touch with their feminine side guilt-free. At times I thought the friends were too harsh on each, but the pink bracelet needed an owner. We hear tales of each friend, their marriages, and additions to their families. The author made me realize that our parents are also just growing with us and they are most certainly going to fail at times and it is ok. He makes great points in the book like, how we work and pay for things nature gives us free, and how what we do affects not just us but those around us who also need guidance. The author made me see a different side to being a man and, by reading the book, I felt more like a family member with a first-class ticket to the whole show. I remember at moments just wanting to scream along with the author with the emotions he made me feel.
There aren't many negatives about the book, however, I do not know if I am the only one to have wanted this. Apart from the map images, I was a little disappointed getting to the end and seeing no pictures from the adventures. I was excited because Alec always made sure to bring along new gadgets on every trip. The author also has a thing with the number 45, mentioning it throughout the book. For some reason, the time passed by will be 45 minutes even when he didn't have a phone at times to be sure that it is correct, just my observation.
My rating for this book is a solid 4 out of 4 stars. It is filled with humor, sadness, and a rollercoaster of emotions. The grammar used was perfectly executed. The book is written in non-chronological order with the author using flashbacks to explain certain events in the book and if you aren't focusing, it can confuse you.
I would recommend this book to adults and anyone in need of a little adventure and guidance in their life. Vulgar language is used quite often in this book as a means of expression and they make mention of sexual acts which is not too explicit. They make mention of God as she in the book however, nothing that would be hurtful towards any religion.
I would also like to make a tribute to the women in these men's lives, I salute you for standing by them throughout all Man Missions, making this book a reality. Finally, a message I got from this book is to live in the moment, fearlessly and authentically even when it seems as if it clashes with the norm, and mental health and self-care are essential for everyone.
