This is a book that is set to take the reader by surprise. A trip into the wilderness of some old friends and a pair of newly-united grandfather and granddaughter gives the impression of some innocent fun. But it most definitely isn’t. Charlie Sheldon’s Strong Heart starts with a blow and takes hold of the reader right from the first chapter.

While Tom, Myra, and William are preparing for a long-awaited camping trek, a knock on the door adds to the adventure and flips Tom’s entire life upside-down. Tom’s ex-wife, Ruth, shows up with their granddaughter, Sarah, who he knows nothing about. Sarah is now an orphaned child who’s been going from one home to another and struggles with the feeling of being rejected. Tom takes in the troubled child, and together, they decide to take her with them for the hike. Their trek initially starts with Tom still adjusting to the fact that his granddaughter is accompanying them and Sarah continues being her grumpy self. Tom’s desperation to solve his grandfather’s mystery soon changes into multiple adventures, all at once.

Their hike teaches them one too many things about each other and their relations, and Charlie Sheldon has beautifully depicted this exploration. The book takes the reader with them on their journey and keeps them hooked from the beginning. The author also gives a very detailed and beautiful description of the Pacific Northwest. Sarah’s perseverance throughout the story is inspiring. The author’s clever writing shows her stubbornness and strength along with the kind of innocence a kid of her age would have. For example, naming the people on the boat, like Thin Hair, Pretty Face, and mentioning objects only a child like her would observe.

I believe each character and their roles in the story have a much deeper meaning than the lines convey. The fear and softness behind Sarah’s stubborn and grumpy nature, Tom’s undeniable care for the granddaughter he knew nothing about, and William and Myra’s true spirit of friendship make this one of the most fulfilling reads.

I loved how the author has brilliantly taken the readers through two stories parallelly. However, the only thing I would want different is a few parts of the story a little briefly described. Additionally, I found minor editing mistakes in the book, but they did not disturb my reading experience; hence, I rate it 4 out of 4. If you want an unusual family adventure story, this is the one you must get your hands on.
