Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a book that tells the story of four friends who go on a week-long adventure to different parts of the world every year, as a way of escaping the harsh realities of life and just be themselves. All four friends will push themselves to the limit doing strenuous activities ranging from intense trekking, cycling, ice climbing and other activities that are physically demanding; a yearly ritual that will last over a span of fifteen years. Despite encountering near death situations, failures and setbacks in their various lives, they will rediscover themselves in the course of their journey, conquer their fears and live their own lives according to their own rules. It is a story about friendship, love, relationships, sacrifices, marriage, happiness, pain and desire.

The book gives a deeper insight into the men's world, how men think and what is expected of them, either from family or the society. It shows the inability of men to make their own decisions on how they want to live their life. The author portrays what it takes to be a real man. It is imperative to note that men do suffer too. Society portrays men as beings who are expected to mask their emotions despite being in pain and suffering in silence. They are expected to bottle up their frustrations, unhappiness, confusion, fear, rejection with a straight face, as though it is forbidden to speak out what they truly feel inside of them. And this is so wrong; men are supposed to open up when they are sad or confused, speak out when emotions become overwhelming and seek help when they start spiralling towards breakdown, depression or suicide, either from professionals or trusted allies. Society doesn't really care what their hearts really want and what their passion is. Are most men doing what they truly want to do? Or they are just forced to follow the set standard of being a man; be the provider, protector, good son, husband and father. Deep down, are they truly happy?.

There are lessons to learn from the different life experiences of the characters that serve as guides to prevent one from repeating the same mistakes. There is a generous supply of words of wisdom and advice. Reading through the book, I realized it is all the little things we do that matters, to keep relationships happy and last long as well. It is okay to sometimes behave as kids and forget all our worries. We just have to live in the moment and search for happiness deep within ourselves. This title made me realize, it is good to follow one's passion and dream to avoid a life of frustration and emptiness. Sometimes it is better to defy all odds, do what we want, achieve the best we can and not just follow every dictates of the culture, even though we might come off as crazy to others, because we choose to be different.

The narrative technique used is commendable. The use of vivid descriptions by the author made it easier to understand and connect with each character. Although the book contains sexual content and profanity, even some incidents are rather weird and dangerous. Aside this, there's nothing else to dislike about the book.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars because I found it easy to understand and comprehend the storyline, as well as smooth interpretation of the author's choice of words. The book is well edited and I found no grammatical errors. I had a good time reading this wonderful book.

It is a book I will recommend to people who love adventures so much, to people who are having a hard time in their lives and relationships and to young men who are finding it difficult to understand what is required and expected of a real man.
