Review of Backcomb & Tattoo
Bounded together by love though they're from different walks of life, and each had troubles. Backcomb and Tattoo by Shea R Embry is a novel that tells the story of friendship and love between Mary Opal Shook, who prefers to be called Aunt Mary Opal, and her three young friends: Rachael, Jesi, and Nicole. Rachael met Aunt Mary Opal at a friend's party, she met Jesi on a trip to Spain after her mother's death, and the trio met Nicole at a supermarket. Soon, they became close friends.
But as close as these four friends are, they suspected that Aunt Mary Opal was keeping secrets from them even though she had reasons for doing so. Unknown to her friends, Aunt Mary Opal's cancer had come back, and she refused to go through chemotherapy and other related cancer treatments because she could not go through the pain she had once gone through. Aunt Mary Opal desired to enjoy the little time left for her to live and refused to go through the pains of chemotherapy. She later resolved to take her life with dignity, and she needed someone to assist her with this suicide mission. Did her friends find out about her secret? Were they able to convince her to change her decision? Was her suicide mission successful? Find out by reading this book.
This book tells a story of true friendship and love. Even though they all have their struggles, they stayed loyal to one other. Even when they had disagreements, they still settled them without letting it affect their friendship. I felt they were more than a family. I admire Nicole's strength to heal from the emotional hurt of her past relationship and open her heart to love and be loved. I love Rachael's strength to divorce her husband and stay true to herself. I love Jesi's character because she made a great sacrifice for love. For someone who is not used to staying in a place for a long time, I love that she embraced her new life with her new friends and stayed true to them. I also admire Aunt Mary Opal so much because she didn't allow her past to deter her from enjoying her present. The book touches on sensitive themes such as domestic violence, true friendship, assisted suicide, and self-discovery. I learned that the best way to love someone is to love and be able to define yourself first.
I found nothing to dislike about the book. The suspense kept me glued to it, and it's also a mix of emotions. I can be teary-eyed at one point and start laughing a few pages later. There were flashbacks in the book, but this didn't affect the storyline. The plot was captivating and well written.
I rate this book four out of four stars because I enjoyed reading it and learned a lot from it. I learned that people who support us and are loyal to us are our family, even though we might not be related. Also, I found no grammatical errors while reading it. This book is exceptionally well-edited.
I recommend this book to people who love reading about adventure, friendship, relationships, and self-discovery. It is unsuitable for children because of the sexual scenes and profane language and is more suitable for young adults and mature audiences.
