In the words of Aunt Mary Opal, fun is the best thing to have.

Backcomb & Tattoo by Shea R Embry is based on the lives of four women who live very different lives but somehow become friends, Rachael according to Aunt Mary Opal, is the sweet one, she is an interior designer married to an absentee artiste. Aunt Mary Opal who isn't really anybody's aunt, is a retired CIA agent or so she says, and the leader of the group. Jesi is the impatient one, also according Aunt Mary Opal, she travels around the country and never stays in a place for too long. Nicole, the intelligent one, is recovering from an abusive marriage. This four very different women somehow become best of friends and share secrets, secrets that end up coming back to haunt them.

The book kicks off with Rachael who comes back from her hometown, after spending time with her sick mother. She meets Aunt Mary Opal at a house party and is immediately drawn to her because of her charisma but mostly because of her bleached backcomb hair. The two become friends quickly.
Rachael's mom dies and leaves her with some inheritance money which she uses to travel to Spain, to connect with her heritage. She meets carefree Jesi here and the two women click and spend their time in Spain together and they create a bond. Jesi goes back with Rachael to Atlanta and lives in her guesthouse. Rachael introduces Jesi to Aunt Mary Opal and just like that she's the third member of the group.
They run into Nicole at the grocery store, literally and Jesi is already halfway in love with her. Rachael who notices her friend's attraction to the other woman and can also see the sadness in Nicole's eyes, invites her to join the friendship group.

And so it began, the friendship of four, filled with laughter from whenever they opened a Jack Daniels and listened to Aunt Mary or during their weekly Ladies light luncheons, confusion when Jesi and Nicole found Aunt Mary Opal and Rachael on the floor, doing head to head meditations which eventually became an activity that they do every week and most importantly, secrets, Aunt Mary Opal's favorite words were, this is our little secret, and until the very end, they still kept secrets.

I loved the author's way of enthralling her readers, her writing style was unique and it pulled me in. She gave a deep insight into the lives of the four friends and even into the lives of the minor characters, she showed their flaws, their weak points and also their strengths. Each page and chapter wove into the next and it was almost like watching a movie.

What I loved about the book was the tests of the friendship, they had so many stumbling blocks but they were still so strong and firm, it made me hope for such friends. They supported one another, they fought with one another, they laughed with one another and they cried with one another. I laughed and cried with them as well.

What I didn't love about the book was that it didn't give much insight on Nicole's family, the author wrote about her abusive relationship and told us a little but unlike the other characters. Also I felt that Rachael should have given Jake a piece of her mind. It wasn't just fair that she divorced him, I mean the man was cheating on her and was also very absent, I felt she could have done more.

While reading this book, I found no typos and errors so I believe it was professionally edited, I rate it 4 out of 4. I highly recommend it, if you're looking for a book on friendship but be warned, it will break you.
