Review of Man Mission
Man Mission, written by Eytan Uliel, tells the story of four friends, during the span of fifteen years, narrating their daily lives and their yearly trips to exotic locations. The book is divided into fifteen chapters, each for every Man Mission, as their trips are called. At the beginning of the book, and at the beginning of every chapter is shown a map, indicating the destinations of each trip. Furthermore, between each chapter there is a quote of a famous person and a quote from the Bible with a meaning related to what the characters will experience throughout the chapter.
There are infinite reasons to adore this book. It’s well-written and fast-paced, meaning it’s impossible to get bored reading it. Even though I was expecting that all four of the characters would join the yearly adventures, it wasn’t always the case. Personally, I preferred the ones where all four of them participated. Moreover, each trip was rendered unique, thanks to the stunning descriptions of the equally stunning landscapes, from New Zealand to South Africa, Machu Picchu and Iceland.
My personal favorite was chapter ten, which gives us many moments of reflection. The author compared a caged lion at the zoo with a man caged in his own life, then proceeded to show us just how magnificent animals can be in the wild, just like people when they are free. At the end of this chapter there is also one of my favorite quotes from Eminem. Moreover, this chapter pretty much defines the line between stability and uncertainty in the main character’s life.
Another pivotal point of the book was the search for happiness, and how to feel fulfilled in life. As we follow the characters’ journey to find and answer we are reminded once again that happiness is just an emotion. The true way to be happy is to live in the present, without always looking back at the past or wasting time trying to guess what the future will look like.
I couldn’t find any negative aspects to this book. Additionally, the book was exceptionally well edited.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars rating. It gave a perfect depiction of healthy friendship dynamics, showing us characters supporting and tolerating each other through thick and thin. At the end of the day, friendship is one of the most important things in our lives, and we should value that more than anything.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for inspiration for their next vacation, given you like exotic places, and tiring but adventurous activities. I’d also recommend it to anyone looking for insight on the infamous midlife crisis, and how to live through it. Furthermore, I believe anyone who has ever been part of a tight-knit group of friends can resonate with the characters and enjoy this reading.
