Shine a Light is a poetry collection by Nicky Corcoran. These aren't just poems; they're stories. Opening with the trial and error that comes with adolescence, the book starts out youthful and matures into something dark but light all the same. Every poem will leave you with questions. The author not only follows up with some answers to the questions you'd think to pose but the ones you never thought to ask.

Following almost every poem is an elaboration on the poem that came prior. It's within these elaborations that the author explains the purpose of the said poems and what she hopes to have come of them. I wish more authors did this. I'd love to see this become a trend. It's one thing to have the privilege of reading a poem; there's nothing like reading what the author hopes to accomplish with the very poem that you read. "Butterfly" is one of many poems that encourages positivity. I single this poem out because it stood out to me the most.

While the rhymes were good, the rhyme scheme could've been better. A lot of poets are guilty of giving so much love and attention to the rhymes in a poem that they neglect the rhyme scheme. It's hard for me to catch a rhyme when it doesn't appear at the right time. I don't like when a rhyme comes too earlier. I really don't like when a rhyme comes too late. I can't count the number of times that the rhymes in these poems would come far too late. It'd ruin the rhyme itself. I like how soothing the nature of rhymes are. When a rhyme comes unexpectedly, it's anything but soothing.

A lot of these poems could've benefited from an illustrator. It isn't uncommon for a poetry collection to include pictures. So many poetry collections include pictures that it's almost becoming the norm. Being that this poetry collection doesn't include pictures, I couldn't help but feel that something was missing. I could picture every scene that the words would set. I just wish that I could've seen these pictures outside of my head and on the pages.

All things considered, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. While there were things that I didn't love about this book, there was nothing worth robbing it of a perfect score. I'd recommend this book to those who enjoy what are known as "verse novels." This poetry collection reads like one. It's hard to say whether there were errors in this book. While there are technically writing errors, they're presented in a way that gives the writing a bit of style. Because the writing errors seemed to add depth to the poetry, I'm not giving to take anything away from them. Aside from the errors that one can only assume were intentional, there were no errors whatsoever.
