The Summer of the Second Coming, written by Colin Hayward, imagines the story of a prophecy from the bible. This novel follows the lives of multiple characters, to ultimately merge their journeys down one path. Hayward writes most directly for the intellectual. You will come away with a storyline that calls into question your religious beliefs, as well as a smattering of geology, a geographical view of Rome and a quirky knowledge of Paris. The factual nature of this tangential information can make the tale that Hayward spins all that more believable. Does my observation hit the nail on the head of Haywards intended design? If that is the case, well done.

Hayward writes very well, without many notable errors. He was able to portray innately human traits and take the sin out of them. This novel was able to give not one storyline but many that the reader became invested in. Hayward was able to get his point across without being too fantastical.

This novel goes off on many different tangents in order to tie all the pieces together. At one point I questioned whether I should stay with it, as I was taken way left field. Hayward leads the reader down many different paths, sometimes long, in order to arrive at a predetermined destination. This made for an informational long-winded read.

I would rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. This was a very entertaining novel. I smiled knowing that this was someone’s version of this prophecy. The characters were very relatable and the story was rounded out very well. After all that happened Hayward gave the story a very befitting ending.
